Devon Energy produces shale oil in the Permian Basin and shares profit through a variable dividend.
A shale well differs from a conventional one in its short cycle: it delivers most of its output in the first year or so, after which the flow falls sharply. Volume therefore has to be replenished by continuous drilling, and the share of spending devoted to maintaining production is higher than in classic oil extraction.
The industry changed its behaviour after a decade of unprofitable growth: companies now limit drilling and return cash to shareholders instead of raising volumes at any price. Hence a payout structure where a base amount is fixed and a top-up depends on the oil price. Risks: the barrel price, the quality of remaining acreage and contractor costs.
