Equitable sells retirement and insurance products and owns a large asset manager.
The base is annuities with downside protection: the client receives part of an index's gain but does not bear the full loss when it falls. The company provides that with options, and profit arises from the difference between what is promised to the client and what such protection costs in the market.
The second part is a stake in a well-known asset manager, earning fees on assets under management and adding to the result something independent of insurance risk. Risks: market volatility affecting the cost of guarantees, the accuracy of assumptions about client behaviour, and interest rates. A dividend is paid and buybacks are very active.
