HP makes personal computers and printers — and earns above all from cartridges.
The computer line supplies volume but almost no profit: the market is mature, competition is on price, and components come from the same suppliers as competitors use. Fleet refreshes come in waves tied to equipment lifetimes and to new operating system releases.
Printing works differently: the printer sells cheaply and the profit comes from ink and toner bought for years. That model is under pressure from two sides — offices print less and third-party compatible cartridges take share. The company answers with print subscriptions and protections for original supplies. A dividend is paid and buybacks are active.
