Nucor melts steel from scrap in electric furnaces — a model more flexible than blast furnaces.
An electric arc furnace starts and stops within hours, whereas a blast furnace cannot be shut down without enormous loss. That allows matching output to demand and staying profitable at prices where integrated mills move into loss.
The feedstock is scrap rather than ore and coke, so cost depends on scrap and electricity prices. Emissions from this route are markedly lower, which becomes a commercial advantage where the buyer counts carbon.
Demand comes from construction, infrastructure, automotive and energy; steel import tariffs are a significant factor in domestic prices. The company has paid a dividend for many years and buys back stock actively.
