Steel Dynamics melts steel from scrap in electric furnaces — cheaper and more flexible than blast furnace production.
An electric furnace can be started and stopped within hours, whereas a blast furnace cannot be banked without serious consequences. That changes behaviour in a downturn: when demand falls the company cuts output and preserves profitability instead of pushing metal out at a loss. Its cost base is tied to scrap and electricity rather than ore and coke.
The company deliberately builds downstream: it does not merely melt steel but turns it into finished products and structures carrying a higher mark-up. Demand comes from construction, carmaking and industrial projects. Risks: the spread between steel and scrap prices, imports and the industrial cycle. Steel Dynamics pays a dividend and buys back stock actively.
