Sysco delivers food to restaurants, schools and hospitals — the largest foodservice wholesaler.
It is simpler for a restaurant to take everything from one supplier: meat, vegetables, crockery and napkins arrive on one lorry to a schedule. That convenience is paid for in mark-up, while the company earns on purchasing scale and route density — the more customers on one run, the cheaper each delivery.
Margins are thin, so the result turns on logistics and the share of own-label goods, which are more profitable than outside brands. Demand reflects how often people eat out: in a downturn restaurant traffic falls before grocery retail does. Risks: food inflation, fuel costs and driver shortages. Sysco pays a dividend and has raised it for many consecutive years.
