Volume, capitalisation and the peg: whether they hold the dollar

A stablecoin is a token pegged to the value of the dollar. The peg is held in different ways: some issues are backed by reserves in bank accounts and short treasury bills, others by crypto collateral, others still by market mechanisms without direct backing. A deviation of a fraction of a per cent is routine; a wide and lasting gap means the market doubts the backing.
