The screener: searching for securities rather than confirming your view

A screener answers the question of which securities satisfy a set of conditions. It does not answer what to buy, and the whole value of the tool disappears the moment it is used for the second question.
How to set conditions
Start with a hypothesis rather than with filters. "Companies with low leverage and durable cash flow" is a hypothesis. A set of seven sliders adjusted until only the desired ticker remains is not.
What to filter on
Leverage, profitability, valuation, liquidity.

Sorting is not ranking
Sort by dividend yield and the top of the list is not the best companies but the ones whose price fell most. That is worth remembering every time.
What to do with the output
A list from a screener is the start of the work rather than its conclusion. Next comes reading the accounts.
