Imperial Oil is a Canadian integrated company: oil sands production, refining and the Esso filling station network.
Production comes from Alberta's oil sands — a resource with enormous reserves and high cost. Such a deposit does not deplete quickly like a shale well but requires large investment and operates for decades, so decisions are taken over very long horizons.
Refining and retail provide a counterweight: when crude falls, refining margins often widen, and the integrated structure smooths the cycle. Esso stations add steady consumer income.
A specifically Canadian factor is the differential between local and world crude prices: it depends on pipeline capacity, and expanding that capacity directly raises revenue. The controlling shareholder is ExxonMobil. The company pays a dividend and buys back stock actively.
