Kinder Morgan owns gas pipelines and terminals — a tariff business independent of the gas price.
The company transports and stores natural gas, refined products and carbon dioxide, charging by volume. A large share of capacity is contracted in advance, so cash flow is predictable and largely indifferent to whether the commodity is expensive or cheap.
A new demand source appeared recently: data centres and returning industrial production need electricity, increasingly supplied by gas-fired plants. Connecting generation to trunk lines has become a growth avenue that did not exist a few years ago.
The principal constraint is permitting: building new routes in the United States meets resistance, which both caps growth and protects existing assets. The company carries debt by design and pays a high dividend.
