Eversource delivers electricity, gas and water across New England — the region with the country's highest tariffs.
The company owns networks rather than plants: profit is set by the rate base and the allowed return, not by the volume of energy sold. The region depends on imported gas because pipeline capacity is scarce, and that keeps residents' bills high regardless of what the utility does.
High tariffs are a political problem in themselves: regulators under voter pressure refuse increases, and the allowed return ends up below neighbouring states'. The company exited offshore wind projects, booking a large loss, and concentrated on networks. Risks: commission decisions and borrowing costs. A dividend is paid and raised annually.
