Old Dominion hauls less-than-truckload freight — shipments that do not fill a trailer.
Less-than-truckload economics are harder than full-load: freight from several shippers is consolidated at a terminal, sorted and delivered. Profit depends on terminal network density and planning accuracy — empty miles consume margin faster than any other cost.
The company invested in its own terminals for years while competitors economised, and achieved the industry's best operating ratio. That lets it raise price and shed volume in a downturn without losing profitability. Risks: industrial production and driver labour costs. The terminal network is the industry's main barrier: rebuilding one costs billions and takes years. The company pays a small dividend and buys back stock.
