Motor insurance is a commodity market where the buyer compares prices in a minute. The winner is not the cheapest but the one who segments risk most accurately: good drivers get a low price and are taken from competitors, bad ones get a high price and produce no loss. The company is built on exactly that.

The tool is telematics: observing driving behaviour through an app or an in-car device. It turns risk assessment from statistics by age and postcode into measurement of a specific person's behaviour, an advantage hard to replicate without accumulated data.

The health metric is the combined ratio — the share of premium consumed by claims and expenses. The industry is cyclical: rising parts and repair costs hit margins before rates can be raised, and after rate increases some customers leave. Progressive pays a dividend, including a variable component tied to the year's result.
