Target is a retailer where half the basket is discretionary, making it more sensitive to consumer mood than grocery chains.
The assortment splits in two: groceries and everyday goods that are always bought, and apparel, home goods and electronics that are easy to postpone. The second half carries better margins but is the first to sag when spending tightens.
The difference from discounters is positioning: stores look and feel better than competitors', and private labels compete on design rather than price. That attracts a higher-income shopper while making the chain more vulnerable in a downturn.
Online orders are fulfilled from stores, which is cheaper than warehouses and faster to deliver. Risks: consumer spending, shrinkage, and demand forecasting accuracy — a buying error becomes a markdown. Target is a dividend aristocrat with a long record of increases.
