TechnipFMC builds the equipment that sits on the seabed at underwater oil wells.
Subsea production is the industry's most demanding engineering: wellheads, pipelines and control systems must work without maintenance for years at a depth of kilometres. The company supplies all of it as an integrated package rather than as separate units, and that is its main difference from competitors.
Projects are long: years pass between a decision to develop a field and first oil, so the order backlog says more about the future than current revenue does. Deepwater projects returned to oil companies' plans because they deliver large volumes for decades. Risks: the oil price, customers deferring decisions and executing fixed-price contracts. The dividend is small.
