Hexcel makes carbon fibre and composites from which modern aircraft wings and fuselages are built.
Composite is lighter than aluminium at the same strength, and an aircraft's weight translates directly into fuel burn. New long-haul models are more than half composite, and the content per aircraft rose several times over the previous generation.
The material is qualified together with the aircraft and written into its design documents: changing supplier means recertifying the structure. Hence a position locked in for the whole programme. Revenue depends on the assembly rate at two airframe makers, and that ran behind plan for years. Risks: assembly schedules, raw material prices and the energy intensity of production. The company pays almost no dividend.
