Ionis switches off the synthesis of individual proteins with short molecules — the platform an entire field grew out of.
The company spent decades developing antisense drugs when almost nobody believed in them, and carried the technology through to approved medicines. The principle is the same as RNA interference: not to block a finished protein but to stop the cell from making it.
For a long time the company lived on licensing: it advanced a programme to a certain stage and handed it to large pharmaceutical partners for royalties. It is now launching drugs itself, which promises a larger share of success and demands a sales force of its own. Risks: trial outcomes, the cost of launching alone and competition from related technologies. The company pays no dividend.
