MPLX is Marathon Petroleum's pipeline partnership: tariff income and high distributions.
The partnership form means different taxation and different paperwork for the investor: payments are called distributions rather than dividends. That is worth understanding before buying — reporting here is more complex than for an ordinary share.
The assets are pipelines, storage, gas processing plants and terminals. The primary customer is parent Marathon Petroleum, whose refineries provide guaranteed volume. That link ensures predictability while implying concentration on one client.
Income is tariff-based and largely insensitive to commodity prices. The growth line is gathering and processing gas in shale regions. Risks: permitting constraints, cost of capital and the parent's decisions. The partnership raises distributions annually.
