PPG makes paints and coatings — from a tin in a hardware shop to the protection on an aircraft fuselage.
Half the business is industrial coatings: automotive, aerospace, protection for steel structures and ships. A coating is matched to a specific product and tested at the customer's site, so changing supplier requires requalification — relationships are long and pricing holds better than in ordinary chemicals.
The other half is paint for repair and construction, where brand and shelf availability decide. Costs are tied to petrochemical inputs, and the result depends on whether the company can pass their increases into price. Risks: construction and automotive cycles, raw material prices and demand in Europe and China. PPG has raised its dividend for decades.
