Essential Utilities supplies water and gas — a rare combination of two regulated networks in one company.
The water sector is fragmented: thousands of systems belong to municipalities that lack the money to replace century-old mains or to meet tightening quality rules. The company buys such systems, invests capital in them and recovers it through tariffs — hence growth rare for a regulated business.
The gas half works the same way: gas is passed through at cost while the company earns on the delivery charge and on a main replacement programme the regulator allows into tariffs quickly. Both halves face inelastic demand. Risks: state commission decisions, borrowing costs and new water quality standards. The dividend is raised annually.
