Ameren supplies electricity and gas to Missouri and Illinois — a regulated utility with no merchant generation.
Profit is determined by the size of the rate base and the allowed return on it, not by the volume of energy sold, so the capital plan replaces a revenue forecast here. Replacing coal plants, hardening networks and building transmission lines are scheduled years ahead and approved by the regulator.
What distinguishes the company is operating in two states with different rules: in one the tariff is set by traditional proceedings, in the other a formula mechanism makes recovery of investment faster and more predictable. Demand is supported by data centres and industrial connections. Risks: commission decisions, borrowing costs and weather. The company pays a dividend.
