After spinning off generation, Exelon is a pure network company: wires and meters with not a single power plant.
The company owns distribution networks in Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington. It generates no electricity and earns nothing from its price: income comes from delivery charges set by regulators on the basis of invested capital. That makes the result predictable and largely detached from fuel prices.
Separating from generation was deliberate: two businesses with different risk profiles were valued at a discount while they sat together. Growth now depends on how much network investment is approved, and that is supported by electrification and by connecting large customers. The risk is political: tariffs are approved by state commissions, and in an election year a ruling can land tougher than the calculation. Exelon pays a high dividend.
