ATI melts titanium and heat-resistant alloys for aircraft engines — metals ordinary steel cannot replace.
A turbine blade operates above the melting point of many metals, and the alloy for it is developed together with the engine. A supplier goes through years of qualification with the manufacturer, after which its material is written into the design documents — changing it costs more than tolerating the price.
Hence a position rare in metals: price is set by contract and by a shortage of qualified capacity rather than by an exchange. Demand comes from aircraft production, from servicing the flying fleet and from defence programmes. Risks: assembly schedules at the two airframe makers, nickel prices and the energy intensity of production. The company pays no dividend.
