Consolidated Edison supplies New York with electricity, gas and steam — a rare case of a city-wide steam network.
The service territory does not grow and cannot: it is an already-built city. Profit therefore rises not from new customers but from investment in replacing ageing infrastructure, which the regulator allows into the tariff. Growth is slow and highly predictable, and the stock behaves closer to a bond than to an equity.
The company has raised its dividend for longer than almost any other on the American market, and that is why it is held — yield and constancy matter more than momentum. The flip side: when rates rise such a stock falls along with bonds. A separate risk is New York State policy on removing gas from buildings, which over time shrinks one of the two lines.
