Atmos Energy does gas only: distribution networks with no power plants and no energy trading.
A pure distribution model is simpler than most utilities: gas is bought and passed to the customer at cost, while the company earns on the delivery charge set by the regulator from invested capital. The gas price flows straight through and does not affect profit.
Growth comes from the programme of replacing old cast iron and steel mains with polyethylene. That is not a management choice but a safety requirement, and the regulator allows such spending into tariffs quickly — hence predictable rate base growth for years ahead. The main territory is Texas, where population is rising. The company raises its dividend every year.
