Carnival is the world's largest cruise operator, still paying off the years its fleet stood idle.
A cruise is sold in advance, so the company receives money months before sailing — customer deposits are in effect interest-free funding. Onboard revenue matters as much as the ticket price: drinks, excursions, the casino and internet carry a higher mark-up than the voyage itself.
Ship occupancy usually exceeds one hundred per cent, because it is counted as two passengers per cabin while three and four often travel. The legacy of the idled fleet is heavy debt, and paying it down is the central story: each year of lower interest expense noticeably improves profit. Risks: fuel prices, outbreaks and leisure's sensitivity to a downturn. The company pays no dividend.
