Freedom Holding is a broker and bank in Kazakhstan and neighbouring countries, listed on an American exchange.
The company grew out of broking for private investors in a region where the stock market is only forming and competition is weak. A bank, insurance, payments, airline ticket sales and telecommunications were added to the broker — an ecosystem around one app.
That combination of fast growth and disparate lines makes the accounts hard to assess, and the company has more than once been the subject of investigations and critical publications. A separate factor is country risk and the currency. Risks: regulation across several jurisdictions, transparency of operations and the quality of acquired assets. The company pays no dividend.
