Atlassian sells tools for development teams — Jira and Confluence — with almost no sales force.
The model is unusual: the product is bought from the bottom up rather than the top down. A team starts a subscription itself, neighbouring departments follow, and only then does a corporate agreement appear. That sharply reduces selling costs and explains high margins, while capping deal size against competitors who sell through negotiation.
The company moved customers from their own servers to the cloud, which produced predictable subscription revenue and the chance to sell additional modules. Risks: employment in the technology industry, which directly drives seat counts, and competition with Microsoft. The company pays no dividend.
