Baxter makes infusion pumps, intravenous solutions and dialysis equipment — the consumables of a hospital ward.
The products are literally everyday: saline, intravenous sets, pumps standing by every bed. That means a low mark-up at enormous volume, and the result depends on manufacturing and logistics efficiency more than on product novelty.
Nature exposed the vulnerability: a hurricane that damaged a large solutions plant caused a nationwide shortage and forced hospitals to postpone elective surgery — manufacturing concentration proved a risk beyond the company itself. It spun the kidney care line into a separate structure and is reducing debt. Risks: hospital reimbursement, costs and manufacturing quality. A dividend is paid.
