Insulet makes an insulin pump with no tubing — it sticks straight onto the skin.
An ordinary pump connects to the body by tubing and hangs on a belt; that is awkward and visible. Here the reservoir and mechanism are combined in a small pod that attaches to the skin and is replaced every few days. It is controlled from a phone, and dosing is calculated automatically from glucose sensor data.
The economics are effectively a subscription: the pod is disposable, and revenue recurs while the patient uses the system. The market is expanding from type 1 diabetes into type 2, where patients are an order of magnitude more numerous. Risks: competition from pump and drug makers, insurer reimbursement decisions and the cost of the disposable part. The company pays no dividend.
