Bunge buys, ships and processes crops worldwide — above all oilseeds.
The company owns grain elevators, port terminals, ships and plants that process soy and sunflower. It earns not on the price of grain but on the spread between raw material cost and processed output — oil and meal — and on logistics: buying where the harvest is and selling where the demand is.
A merger with a large grain trader widened the geography and added access to crop origin in new countries. Demand is supported by livestock farming, which needs meal, and by biofuel, which needs oil. Risks: weather on several continents, trade restrictions and biofuel policy. Crush margins are the number to watch: they widen when the harvest is large and processing capacity is short. A dividend is paid.
