FirstEnergy delivers electricity in Ohio, Pennsylvania and neighbouring states — networks without generation of its own.
The company generates no power and earns nothing from its price: income comes from transmission and distribution charges set by the regulator from invested capital. The capital programme — hardening networks, replacing substations, building transmission — is what determines profit growth years ahead.
A separate part of the story is the corruption scandal around the passage of a law in the company's favour, which cost it a deferred prosecution agreement, a fine and a change of leadership. The consequences are long: a regulator watches such a company more closely and rules more strictly on tariffs. Risks: state commissions, borrowing costs, weather. The company pays a dividend.
