Gartner sells subscriptions to research and advice — to an executive choosing a supplier worth millions.
The client pays not to be wrong: the company's analysts compare suppliers, assess technologies and answer a subscriber's questions directly. The subscription costs little relative to a project budget, while a wrong choice costs incomparably more — hence a durable willingness to pay.
The economics are subscription-based and highly profitable: one piece of research is sold to thousands of clients, and the cost of an additional subscriber is close to zero. The figure watched is the renewal rate. Risks: spending cuts at technology companies, which make up a noticeable part of the client base, and the emergence of free comparison sources. The company pays no dividend but buys back heavily.
