Textron makes business jets, helicopters and military equipment — several different manufacturers under one name.
The best-known part is light and mid-size business jets: a cyclical market dependent on corporate profits and the mood of wealthy buyers. Servicing the fleet already sold provides steady income that smooths troughs in new deliveries.
The helicopter line combines civil and military orders; the latter are set by the defence budget and scheduled years out, including a programme for a new high-speed rotorcraft for the army. There is also armoured vehicle and industrial production. Risks: the business aviation cycle, defence budgets and executing long programmes. The dividend is token and buybacks are active.
