McCormick sells spices and seasonings and also develops flavours for food manufacturers.
The retail half is conveniently arranged for the producer: a jar of spice costs little, is bought rarely and is taken by habit, while shelf space in a shop is held by one brand for decades. A price rise of a few percent passes unnoticed by the shopper but shows in the accounts.
The second half is developing flavour blends for food companies and fast food chains: the formulation is locked into the customer's product, and changing supplier means changing how the finished dish tastes. Risks: raw material prices depending on harvests in different countries, pressure from retailer own labels and currency rates. The dividend has been raised for decades in a row.
