Universal Health Services runs general hospitals and psychiatric clinics — two businesses with different economics.
A general hospital is hard: the emergency department must accept anyone, a substantial share of patients do not pay, and staffing costs rise faster than reimbursement. Profitability depends on what share of arrivals carry commercial rather than government insurance.
The psychiatric line works differently and produces disproportionate profit: stays are long, equipment is inexpensive, and demand exceeds supply — the country is short of beds. The constraint here is clinical staff rather than patients. Risks: government reimbursement, labour costs and audits of admission appropriateness. The dividend is token; buybacks are very active.
