FTAI Aviation leases aircraft engines and sells refurbished parts instead of new ones.
An engine costs more than the airframe and is maintained separately: an overhaul runs to millions and takes months during which the aircraft is grounded. The company offers an alternative — a replacement engine on lease immediately — while tearing down old units yields serviceable parts cheaper than factory ones.
The model works because manufacturers hold new-part prices high and repair queues are long. A substantial share of the world fleet flies on one widespread engine type, and the company concentrated on precisely that one. Risks: the availability of suitable units on the market, debt load and the engine maker's own actions. A dividend is paid.
