Bentley Systems makes software for designing infrastructure — bridges, roads, plants and networks.
A bridge design lives for decades, and the model it was created in is needed not only during construction but at every repair. An engineering organisation therefore stays in one environment for a very long time: moving a model to another system loses data and requires retraining the whole department.
The company deliberately moved away from the buildings market, where competition is denser, into infrastructure, where the client is governmental and projects run longer. It is sold by subscription and revenue is almost entirely recurring. The growing part is digital twins of existing assets. Risks: infrastructure budgets and engineer availability. The dividend is token.
