A coin's market capitalisation is its price times the number of coins in circulation. The sum of capitalisations shows the size of the whole market and moves both with prices and with new issuance. Turnover over 24 hours is a quantity of another kind: it speaks not to the market's size but to how actively it trades, and so climbs on days of sharp moves.
