Duration

The weighted average time to recover a bond investment, and the measure of its sensitivity to interest rates.

How to read the number

The longer the duration, the more sharply a bond's price reacts to a change in the key rate.

When the metric lies

Duration is not the same as time to maturity: for a bond with large coupons it is noticeably shorter.

Also known as: duration, macaulay duration
