The currency in which the cash obligations arising from a trade are discharged.
How to read the number
It need not match the currency a security is denominated in: an issue can carry one denomination and settle in another.
When the metric lies
Currency codes are written differently across trading systems and accounting records. Adding amounts without reconciling the code is a way to get a wrong total quietly.
