ExxonMobil is a vertically integrated oil and gas company: production, refining and chemicals in one loop.
Production drives the result and depends entirely on oil and gas prices the company does not control. The key assets of recent years are the Permian shale basin in the United States and deepwater projects in Guyana, both notable for low cost per barrel; they determine the price at which the company stays profitable.
Refining and chemicals act as a natural counterweight: when crude is cheap, refining margins often widen, and the reverse. That smooths the cycle without removing it — the year's result is still set by the average price of the commodity.
The investment profile is defined by dividend policy: the company has raised its payout for decades and aims to maintain it even in loss-making years, funding it with debt. The long-term risk is the energy transition and regulatory pressure; the company's answer is low-cost production and carbon capture rather than renewable generation.
