Analog Devices makes analog circuits for industry, automotive and communications — components with very long life cycles.
The products are signal converters, amplifiers, power-management circuits and sensors. This is not a commodity: each part is designed for a specific class of problem, sells for years, and is locked into the customer's product for its whole production life. Changing supplier means redesigning the board, so market share moves slowly.
The Maxim Integrated acquisition strengthened its position in automotive electronics and power management. The main markets are industrial automation, automotive, communications and medical equipment; consumer electronics is a smaller share, which makes revenue less cyclical but ties it to the industrial cycle.
Manufacturing is partly in-house and partly outsourced — the company deliberately keeps a hybrid model to absorb demand peaks. Analog Devices pays a dividend and has raised it for many consecutive years; in industrial downturns orders fall noticeably before the weakness appears in macroeconomic statistics.
