Boeing builds aircraft, and its recent fortunes turn on manufacturing quality and on rebuilding regulatory trust.
The commercial arm builds the 737, 787 and 777 families; the defence arm makes aircraft, helicopters and space systems. The order backlog is very large and stretches years ahead — the bottleneck is not demand but the ability to build and deliver.
Manufacturing became the central problem: incidents and identified defects led the regulator to cap production rates, delaying deliveries and triggering compensation to airlines. That produced negative cash flow and rising debt even while demand for aircraft stayed strong.
The industry feature is a duopoly with Airbus and an extremely high barrier to entry: developing a new aircraft takes a decade and billions. That protects the company over the long run without offsetting current costs. The dividend is suspended, and its resumption would be read by the market as a sign of normalisation.
