Kimberly-Clark makes nappies, tissues and hygiene products — Huggies, Kleenex, Kotex.
These goods are bought weekly and without deliberation, so revenue is resilient to the cycle. The main input is pulp, whose price swings noticeably; the result depends on whether the company can pass that into shelf prices, and negotiations with large retailers take months.
Pressure comes from retailers' own labels offering the same formulation more cheaply — the premium for a name holds up worse here than in cosmetics. Growth has to be found in emerging markets, where per-person consumption of such goods is still low. The company has raised its dividend for decades, and that is what makes it a stock for income rather than growth.
