J.M. Smucker owns coffee, peanut butter and jam brands — names that have held shelf space for decades.
Coffee for the home is the largest part: the shopper takes the familiar tin without comparing prices and switches brand reluctantly. The flip side is direct exposure to the exchange price of beans, which rose sharply after poor harvests, and passing that into shelf prices takes time and never happens in full.
The second pillar is peanut butter and jams, categories with high market share and steady demand. Buying a sweet snacks maker proved expensive and required write-downs: the category came under pressure from the shift toward healthier eating. Risks: coffee and peanut prices, retailer own labels and debt. The dividend is high and rising.
