Union Pacific is the railroad of the western United States, hauling coal, grain, cars and containers over track it owns.

A railroad is a business with a near-insurmountable barrier to entry: building a parallel line is impossible both economically and in terms of right of way. Hence durable pricing and margins a trucking company competing with thousands of peers can never reach.

The efficiency metric is the operating ratio — the share of revenue consumed by costs. The industry spent a decade lowering it through precision scheduling: longer trains, fewer departures, fewer locomotives and staff. The side effect is shipper complaints about inflexibility and regulatory attention.

Demand reflects the physical economy: coal volumes fall structurally, intermodal depends on imports, grain on harvests and exports. Diesel and wages are the main cost lines. Union Pacific pays a dividend and buys back stock consistently.
