Disney is a library of characters monetised through parks, films, streaming and merchandise.
The most profitable part is parks and cruises: they produce durable income and handle inflation well, since prices can follow demand. The second part is content production — the Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm studios plus television assets including ESPN. The third is streaming through Disney+ and Hulu.
Streaming lost money for years: subscribers were bought with price while content stayed expensive. Turning that segment profitable has been the main storyline of recent years, via price increases, ad-supported tiers and a crackdown on password sharing. Meanwhile linear television shrinks, and ESPN is looking for a direct-to-viewer format.
The point of the whole structure is reuse: a successful character earns in cinemas, then in subscriptions, then in a park and in toys. Hence the vulnerability — a weak film slate hits several segments at once. The dividend was suspended during the pandemic and later restored.
