Cognex makes machine vision — cameras and software with which a production line checks itself.
A camera on the line reads a code, measures a part and rejects what was assembled wrongly — faster and more reliably than a person, thousands of times an hour. The difficulty lies not in the optics but in recognition: the same part looks different under different lighting and orientation, and it is the software that distinguishes suppliers.
Demand is cyclical and depends on factory capital budgets, above all in automotive, electronics and logistics. The growing part is recognition based on trained models, which copes with tasks that resist rigid rules. Risks: the industrial cycle, demand in China and competition. A dividend is paid.
