Hormel makes tinned meat, turkey and peanut butter — brands familiar to several generations.
The portfolio splits in two: processing raw meat, where margins are thin and depend on input prices, and branded products, where the mark-up is higher and the shopper pays for the name. The company has spent decades shifting toward the latter, buying snack and prepared meal brands.
Turkey is a separate and temperamental part: its price swings, and avian flu outbreaks can wipe out flocks and ruin a year's result. Control of the company rests with a charitable foundation, which rules out a takeover. Risks: feed and meat prices, disease outbreaks and pressure from retailer own labels. The dividend has been raised for decades in a row.
